The oil deposits discovered in southern Chad appear to be the country's most
significant natural resource. Given Chad’s lack of economic development and
social infrastucture, the country’s oil resources offer a unique opportunity
to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

The World Bank provided funding enabling the two host countries to share in
the ownership of the two companies which own and operate the pipeline portion
of the project. This equity participation produces revenues for Chad and
Cameroon in addition to the various royalties, fees, and taxes the two
countries earn in connection with project activities.

Cameroon, like Chad, has been designated as a low-income nation by the World
Bank. The project pipeline through Cameroon to the coast makes it possible to
deliver Chad's landlocked oil to world markets.

A consortium of three energy companies has constructed the project. Since 2003
the Consortium has been producing Chad’s oil and transporting it to market.
The operator of the project is ExxonMobil with 40% participation, joined in
the venture by Petronas with 35% and Chevron with 25%.
